An inverter turns a DC source into usable AC, and the specification is decided by the worst moment rather than the average one. Continuous rating covers the steady load; surge rating covers the instant a motor, a compressor or a pump starts, which can demand several times that for a second or two, and an inverter sized on running load alone simply shuts down at every start. State both. The waveform is the second decision and it is not cosmetic: a modified sine output costs less and will run heaters and simple loads, but it makes transformers and motors run hot, upsets some electronics and can interfere with instrumentation, so anything with a control system on it wants a true sine output. Then the DC side — the battery voltage window the inverter must accept, and the cable between them, because inverter input current is high and a long thin DC run is the usual cause of a unit that trips on low voltage while the battery is healthy.
