Design life and service life are different things, and the gap between them is where most disappointment with these batteries comes from. A block described as ten-year design life is rated on the assumption of float service at around twenty degrees Celsius, and lead-acid ageing accelerates sharply with temperature — the widely used rule of thumb is that life roughly halves for every eight to ten degrees above that reference. A battery sitting in a plant room at thirty-five degrees is therefore not a ten-year battery, and pretending otherwise means an unplanned replacement at the worst moment. Two other points shape the order. Capacity is quoted at a discharge rate, so a figure in ampere-hours means nothing without knowing whether it is a ten-hour or a twenty-hour rate. And IEC 60896-21 and 60896-22 are the test methods and the requirements that let two quotations actually be compared rather than guessed at.
