Pot life is the number that catches people out here, because it is quoted at a mild laboratory temperature and it collapses as the material gets hotter. A repair compound with a comfortable half-hour working time on the datasheet can be unusable in ten minutes on a surface that has been in the sun, and a batch mixed for a large area sets in the pot before it is spread — which is why summer work is done in smaller batches, in shade, and sometimes with the components kept cool until they are mixed. State the working conditions, not just the material. The rest follows the job. Metal repair compounds rebuild worn shafts, housings and pump casings; wear-resistant grades line chutes and pump volutes against abrasion; chemical-resistant coatings protect bunds and floors; and structural adhesives bond rather than fill. Ratio control matters more than anything else afterwards, so cartridges with static mixers beat hand mixing where accuracy counts.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Application | Metal repair, wear lining, floor or bund coating, or structural bonding |
|---|---|
| Surface temperature at application | It shortens the pot life far more than most datasheets suggest |
| Pot life required | Working time actually needed for the size of the repair |
| Cure time available | How soon the item must return to service |
| Batch size | Large batches exotherm and set faster than small ones |
| Substrate | Steel, concrete, or a specific alloy, and its preparation |
| Surface preparation | Grit blast profile or mechanical abrasion the product needs |
| Service conditions | Temperature, chemical exposure, immersion, or abrasion |
| Machinability | State if the cured compound must be machined or drilled |
| Mixing method | Cartridge with static mixer, or hand mixed by weight |
| Shelf life on delivery | Minimum remaining life your stores procedure requires |
| Quantity | Kits or cartridges per grade, and the area or volume covered |
