Anaerobic thread lockers cure in the absence of air and in the presence of active metal, and both halves of that sentence are specification information. The absence of air is why the product stays liquid in the bottle and sets in the joint. The presence of active metal is why it cures quickly on plain steel and slowly or not at all on stainless, plated, anodised or passivated surfaces — which is where a primer comes in, and where most complaints about a product not working actually originate. Choose the strength grade by how the joint will be taken apart: a low-strength grade releases with hand tools, a medium grade needs proper tools, and a high-strength grade on a large fastener may need heat to break it, so specifying high strength on a component that is serviced quarterly makes life difficult for the fitter. State the thread size too, because the gap it has to fill governs the viscosity.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Strength grade | Chosen by how the joint must be dismantled later |
|---|---|
| Disassembly method | Hand tools, power tools, or heat |
| Thread size | The gap to be filled governs the viscosity required |
| Substrate | Plain steel, stainless, plated, anodised, or passivated |
| Primer required | Inactive surfaces cure slowly or not at all without it |
| Operating temperature | Continuous and peak at the joint |
| Cure time available | Fixture and full cure time the assembly process allows |
| Chemical exposure | Fluids the cured product must resist |
| Product type | Threadlocker, thread sealant, retaining compound, or gasket maker |
| Approvals | State if potable water or gas approval is required for a sealant |
| Shelf life on delivery | Minimum remaining life your stores procedure requires |
| Annual volume | Bottles per grade per year for a schedule price |
