Under the current EN 131 series a ladder is classified Professional or Non-professional, and the difference is not the load rating — both require a minimum 150 kg capacity. It is durability: the professional classification carries a 50,000-cycle test against 10,000 for the domestic grade. A site buying on the headline load figure alone can therefore buy a domestic ladder that is technically rated for the man and his tools and is not built for the number of times it will be used. Ask for the classification explicitly. One more change worth knowing: any ladder of 3,000 mm or longer that can be used leaning is required to have a base stabiliser, so a long leaning ladder quoted without one is quoting an older product. Then the honest question — whether a ladder is the right equipment at all, since much of what gets done from a ladder belongs on a podium or a mobile tower.
