A sling is rated for a lift, not for a load, and the difference is the thing enquiries most often miss. The working load limit marked on the tag applies to a straight vertical pull. Put the same sling in a two-leg configuration and the tension in each leg rises as the angle from vertical increases — at a wide included angle the leg tension can exceed the load itself, which is why a sling that appears generously sized on paper is working near its limit in practice. So the useful enquiry states the load, the number of legs and the sling angle, not just a tonnage. After that, the material follows the job. Chain tolerates heat and abrasion and can be shortened. Wire rope is stiff and resists cutting on edges. Webbing and roundslings are light and kind to a painted or machined surface, and are the most easily destroyed by an unprotected corner.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Load to be lifted | Mass, and how the weight is distributed |
|---|---|
| Number of legs | Single, two, three or four leg configuration |
| Sling angle | Included angle at the hook — it sets the tension in each leg |
| Working load limit | Required WLL in the actual configuration, not the vertical rating |
| Sling type | Chain, wire rope, webbing, roundsling or high-performance fibre |
| Length | Effective working length, and any leg length difference |
| End fittings | Master link, hooks, soft eye or thimble eye |
| Hitch type | Vertical, choke or basket — it changes the rating |
| Edge protection | Sleeves or corner protectors where the load has edges |
| Temperature | Synthetic slings have real temperature limits |
| Environment | Chemical exposure, marine, or gritty conditions |
| Certification | Test certificate and marked tag required with each sling |
| Inspection regime | State the examination interval your procedure requires |
