Load restraint is a different discipline from lifting, and equipment sold for one should not be borrowed for the other. A binder is rated for lashing capacity, which describes how hard it holds a load down onto a deck, and that is not a working load limit for suspending anything. The two numbers are not interchangeable and neither is the hardware. The choice within binders is between lever and ratchet. A lever binder is fast and stores a large amount of energy in the handle as it goes over centre, which is why it can injure the person releasing it and why many sites have moved away from them. A ratchet binder takes longer and releases in controlled increments. Then match the binder to the chain: the grade and size of chain fix which binder is correct, and a high-grade chain with an under-rated binder is limited by the binder, not by the chain.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Lashing capacity | Required restraint rating — not a lifting working load limit |
|---|---|
| Binder type | Lever or ratchet — ratchet releases in controlled increments |
| Chain grade and size | The chain the binder must match |
| End fittings | Grab hooks, clevis or eye, to suit the chain and anchor points |
| Take-up range | Adjustment available, so slack can actually be removed |
| Load being restrained | Mass, and how many restraint points are used |
| Anchor points | Rating and spacing of the points on the trailer or deck |
| Chain length | Lengths required per restraint point |
| Finish | Painted, galvanised, or plated for the environment |
| Marking | Rating and traceability marked on the item |
| Certification | Test certificate required with the assembly |
| Quantity | Sets per vehicle or per load configuration |
