Replacing a wire rope is a matter of matching the machine, not of buying rope of the same diameter. Construction determines how the rope behaves: the number of strands and wires sets its flexibility and its resistance to crushing and abrasion, and a rope that is more flexible than the drum and sheaves were designed for wears in ways nobody expects. Lay direction and rotation resistance matter just as much — a single-fall hoist with a freely suspended load needs a rotation-resistant rope, because ordinary rope will spin the load as it takes tension. The other half of this purchase is knowing when to take the old one off. ISO 4309 sets out care, inspection and discard for crane ropes, and the number of broken outer wires that means discard is not a single figure: it depends on the rope category number, the mechanism classification and whether the drum is single or multi-layer.
