Two choices define a shackle and they are independent of each other. The body shape comes first: a bow or anchor shackle has a wide curved body that will accept several sling legs and tolerate a load applied at an angle, while a dee shackle is narrower, stronger for its size in a straight pull, and must not be side-loaded. Choosing a dee where legs converge is a common and quiet error, because the shackle is loaded in a direction it was never rated for. The pin is the second choice and it follows the duty rather than the load: a screw pin is quick and right for a lift that is rigged and struck the same day, and it can unscrew under vibration or if the sling rotates against it, so anything left in place needs a safety bolt with nut and split pin. Then state the working load limit you need, and ask for the certificate and the traceable marking with it.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Working load limit | Required WLL, allowing for the sling configuration |
|---|---|
| Body type | Bow or anchor for converging legs; dee for a straight pull |
| Pin type | Screw pin for temporary rigging; safety bolt for anything left in place |
| Side loading | State if the load can come off axis — it derates the shackle |
| Jaw width and pin diameter | Must suit the fittings it connects |
| Grade and finish | Alloy grade, and galvanised or self-coloured |
| Environment | Marine, offshore or chemical exposure |
| Temperature | State if the shackle works hot or in a cryogenic service |
| Marking | WLL, grade and traceability code on the body |
| Certification | Test certificate and traceability required with each item |
| Inspection regime | State the examination interval your procedure requires |
| Quantity | Units per size, and whether spares are held |
