A process gas regulator is specified from three pressures and a flow, and the one that is usually missing is the minimum inlet pressure. Sizing at the normal inlet is easy; the regulator has to still deliver the required flow when the supply is at its lowest, which is when it is being asked to do the most work, and a unit sized only for normal conditions runs out of capacity exactly when the system is already struggling. Two more properties belong in the enquiry. Lock-up is how far the outlet drifts above setpoint at no flow, which matters where downstream equipment has a maximum it must never see. And sour service changes everything about the materials: where hydrogen sulphide is present, the metallic materials have to be selected against NACE MR0175 and ISO 15156, and that is not a finish or a trim option but a different bill of materials with a different lead time. State the gas, the three pressures, the flow and whether the service is sour.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Gas or fluid | Composition, and whether hydrogen sulphide is present |
|---|---|
| Sour service | NACE MR0175 and ISO 15156 material selection if it is |
| Maximum inlet pressure | Including any upset condition the body must contain |
| Minimum inlet pressure | The sizing case that is usually left out |
| Outlet pressure | Setpoint, and the tolerance the downstream equipment allows |
| Flow | Normal, minimum and maximum at the outlet condition |
| Lock-up | Permitted rise above setpoint at no flow |
| Regulator type | Direct acting, pilot operated, or a two-stage arrangement |
| Temperature | Process and ambient, including any Joule-Thomson cooling |
| Connections | Flanged or threaded size, rating and facing |
| Relief and protection | Downstream relief, slam-shut, or a monitor regulator |
| Hazardous area | State the zone if any instrumentation is fitted |
