A boom holds oil on water by presenting a barrier above and below the surface, and it has a limit that governs every deployment plan: current. Once the water is moving faster than roughly three quarters of a knot across the boom face, oil is drawn under the skirt and escapes regardless of how well the boom is built — which is why booms are almost never set square across a flowing channel but at an angle, so the component of current across the face stays below that threshold and the oil is deflected along the boom to a collection point. Design the deployment first and the boom follows. Then match the boom to the water: a small harbour boom with modest freeboard and skirt is right inside a jetty, and useless in open water where wave height demands a larger section and a stronger tension member. State the water body, the current, the expected wave height and how the boom will be anchored or towed.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Water body | Sheltered jetty, harbour, open coastal water, or a drainage channel |
|---|---|
| Current speed | Oil is entrained under the skirt above about three quarters of a knot |
| Deployment angle | Booms are angled to deflect, not set square across a flow |
| Wave height | It sets the freeboard and the boom section required |
| Freeboard and skirt depth | Above and below the waterline |
| Boom type | Curtain, fence, permanent inflation, or self-inflating |
| Tension member | Chain or cable sized for the tow and anchor loads |
| Total length | Including the extra needed for the angled deployment |
| Anchoring or towing | Anchor sets, buoys, or the vessels available to tow |
| Storage and deployment | Reel, container, or bagged, and who deploys it |
| Connectors | End connector type, matched to any boom already held |
| Skimming and recovery | State if skimmers and storage are needed with the boom |
