There is one good reason to buy analogue in 2026 and it is the cable already in the wall. HD-over-coax formats put a high definition picture down existing runs, which turns a rewire into a head-end swap and is frequently the difference between a system being upgraded and being left as it is. That is a legitimate engineering decision, not a compromise, particularly in an occupied building or across a site where pulling new cable means excavation. What has to be checked before ordering is compatibility, because the HD-over-coax formats are not interchangeable: a recorder has to support the specific format the cameras use, and mixing them is the most common failure on this line. Two more limits worth stating. Coax carries video a long way but carries no power, so a local supply or a separate power run is still needed. And analogue cameras generally cannot be extended with the analytics an IP system offers.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Reason for analogue | Usually existing coax — state what cable is in place |
|---|---|
| Existing cable type and length | Coax grade and run lengths, which limit the format |
| HD-over-coax format | The specific format — recorder and cameras must match |
| Existing recorder | Make and format it supports, if it is being retained |
| Resolution | Required resolution, within what the cable run supports |
| Lens and field of view | Fixed or varifocal, and the coverage required |
| Power | Coax carries no power — state the local supply arrangement |
| Infrared illumination | Built-in or separate, and the range required |
| Housing rating | IP and impact rating for the mounting position |
| Sun exposure | Direct sun heats a sealed housing — state the position |
| Migration path | State if the site will move to IP later, which affects the head end |
| Quantity | Cameras per type, and the recorder channel count |
