A passive infrared detector works by seeing the difference between a warm body and its background, and that is exactly the problem outdoors in this region. As ambient surface temperature climbs towards body temperature the contrast the sensor depends on collapses, and a PIR that behaved perfectly in February becomes unreliable in July — not faulty, just working outside the conditions that make it possible. External detection therefore usually wants either a dual-technology unit, which requires both an infrared and a microwave trigger before it alarms, or a different technology altogether. The second half of the specification is what you want the detector not to do. Cats, blowing debris, palm fronds moving in wind, a hot vehicle parked in view and direct low sun into the lens are all recognised false alarm sources, and pet immunity, masking and mounting height are how they are managed. State the area, indoor or outdoor, and what moves through it legitimately.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Location | Indoor, covered external, or fully exposed outdoors |
|---|---|
| Detection technology | PIR, microwave, dual technology, or beam |
| Ambient temperature | PIR contrast falls as surfaces approach body temperature |
| Coverage pattern | Volumetric, curtain, long range corridor, or perimeter beam |
| Range and mounting height | Detection distance required, and the height available |
| Known false alarm sources | Animals, debris, vegetation, vehicles, or direct sun |
| Pet or small animal immunity | State the weight to be ignored |
| Anti-masking and tamper | Required where the detector is reachable |
| Connection | Wired to a panel, wireless, or an output to a CCTV system |
| Housing rating | IP and impact rating for the mounting position |
| Power | Panel powered, local supply, or battery with expected life |
| Integration | State if it must trigger camera recording or lighting |
