Resolution is the wrong number to specify a camera with. What matters is pixel density at the target — pixels per metre across the scene — and the DORI levels in IEC 62676-4 put figures on it: roughly 25 pixels per metre to detect that something is there, 62.5 to observe, 125 to recognise someone already known, and 250 to identify a stranger from the image alone. A high-resolution camera covering a wide car park may deliver detection and nothing more, and the footage is useless in exactly the situation it was bought for. Work backwards: decide what each camera must achieve, at what distance, and the lens and sensor follow. Two conditions here make the rest harder than the brochure suggests. Extreme contrast between shaded and sunlit areas needs genuine wide dynamic range, and a camera in a sealed housing in direct sun runs hot, so the mounting position and any sun shroud belong in the design.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Operational requirement | Detect, observe, recognise or identify — per camera |
|---|---|
| Target distance and scene width | With the DORI level, this fixes the pixel density needed |
| Lens | Fixed or varifocal, and the field of view required |
| Lighting conditions | Shaded to sunlit contrast, and night-time illumination |
| Wide dynamic range | Needed where a doorway is dark against bright ground outside |
| Infrared illumination | Built-in or separate, and the range required |
| Housing and sun exposure | Direct sun heats a sealed housing — state the position |
| IP and impact rating | Dust ingress and vandal resistance at the mounting point |
| Power | PoE class, and the budget available on the switch |
| Bandwidth and codec | Codec, bitrate and frame rate — they size the network and storage |
| Analytics | Line crossing, loitering, plate or face — state what is actually used |
| Recording system | The NVR or VMS these must be compatible with |
| Cybersecurity | Firmware update policy and any procurement restriction that applies |
