A thermal camera detects at distances no visible camera can match in darkness, dust or haze, and it will almost never identify anyone. That is the trade, and it is the sentence to keep in mind when specifying one. Thermal sees the heat difference between a body and its background, so it needs no illumination at all and is largely unbothered by blowing sand or glare — which is why it belongs on a long perimeter, a tank farm boundary or a pipeline right of way where lighting the fence line is neither practical nor wanted. The usual arrangement pairs it with a visible camera: thermal detects and cues, the visible camera identifies. Two things to settle. Sensor resolution and lens together decide detection range, and manufacturers quote ranges against different criteria, so compare on pixels on target rather than on a headline metre figure. And separately, a radiometric camera measures temperature and is a condition-monitoring instrument rather than a security one.
