Open time is the specification that decides whether a construction adhesive works, and in this climate it is much shorter than the tin says. A tile adhesive combed onto a hot substrate skins over before the tile is placed, and a tile bedded onto a skinned surface has almost no bond however firmly it is pressed — the classic symptom is tiles that sound hollow and lift a year later, and the cause was a working practice rather than the product. The answers are known: work in smaller areas, shade the substrate, damp it down where the product allows, and start earlier in the day. Substrate preparation is the other half, and it is unglamorous — dust, curing compound and laitance are what most failures are actually stuck to. Note that this page covers bonding products; for facade and glazing joints, where the specification is a movement capability and a cure chemistry, see our silicone sealants page.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Application | Tiling, panel bonding, flooring, anchoring, or general construction |
|---|---|
| Substrates | Both faces, including any coating, curing compound or laitance |
| Substrate preparation | What is being removed — most failures are stuck to dust |
| Open time required | It collapses on a hot substrate — state the working conditions |
| Substrate temperature | At the time of application, not the shade air temperature |
| Adhesive class | The classification the specification names for the duty |
| Exposure | Internal, external, wet area, or submerged |
| Movement accommodation | Deformable grades where the substrate moves |
| Cure and trafficking time | When the work can be walked on or loaded |
| Coverage | Per unit area for the notch or bead size specified |
| Safety data sheets | Required with the offer, in the language the site uses |
| Quantity | By area or by unit, with the wastage allowance |
