A protective coating is a system, not a product, and it is specified as one: a surface preparation grade, a sequence of coats each with a dry film thickness, and a stated durability for a stated environment. ISO 12944 gives that language, classifying atmospheres by corrosivity from mild interiors up through C5 to CX, and the Eastern Province coastline sits at the severe end of it — so a system chosen from a temperate specification will underperform here in a way that shows up as early rust bleeding at edges and welds. Surface preparation is where most failures actually originate. Coatings do not adhere to mill scale, salt or oil, and a blast standard with a stated profile is what makes the rest of the system valid; soluble salt testing on a coastal site is worth the argument it causes. Then application: overcoating windows, humidity and dew point limits, and the fact that a hot substrate flashes off solvent and traps it.
