Nominal pipe size is not a measurement, and it is worth saying so because it is the root of a recurring ordering error. For most sizes the number is a label rather than a dimension: the outside diameter is fixed for a given nominal size and does not change with schedule, and it is the wall that thickens inward as the schedule number rises, so the bore shrinks while the outside stays the same. That is what makes fittings and flanges interchangeable across schedules and what makes a bore calculation wrong if it is taken from the nominal size. State nominal size and schedule together, or state the outside diameter and wall thickness directly. Then the grade, which is doing more work than it looks: the same nominal pipe in different specifications differs in chemistry, in what testing the mill performed and in what a code will allow it to be used for, so a substitution that looks equivalent on the shelf may not be acceptable in the line class.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Specification and grade | The specification and grade the line class names |
|---|---|
| Nominal size and schedule | Or the outside diameter and wall thickness directly |
| Manufacturing route | Seamless or welded, and which welding route if welded |
| Service | Fluid, pressure and temperature, and whether the service is sour |
| End preparation | Plain, bevelled, or threaded, and the bevel angle |
| Lengths | Random, double random, or cut to a stated length |
| Fittings and flanges | State if the matching schedule of fittings is required |
| Galvanising | State if the pipe is to be hot dip galvanised after manufacture |
| Coating | External coating and wrapping for buried or exposed runs |
| Certification | Certificate type, heat traceability and the marking required |
| Storage | End caps and preservation if it will lie in the open |
