Welded pipe is formed from strip or plate and joined along its length, and for most services it is the right answer — cheaper, held to a tighter wall tolerance than seamless, and available in diameters that seamless simply does not reach. What the buyer needs to know is that welded is not one thing. Electric resistance welded pipe is made from strip at smaller diameters; longitudinally submerged arc welded pipe is rolled from plate for large diameters and has a filler weld; and spiral welded pipe is formed helically from strip, which is how very large diameters are made economically. They are not interchangeable in a specification and codes treat them differently, because the weld type determines the joint efficiency the designer may use. So the enquiry should name the route as well as the grade. Then two practical points: the weld seam position is often specified for orientation on site, and the seam is the thing NDT is looking at.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Welding route | ERW, longitudinal submerged arc, or spiral welded |
|---|---|
| Specification and grade | Such as an ASTM or API grade named by the line class |
| Size and schedule | Nominal size and schedule, or the specified wall thickness |
| Joint efficiency | The figure the design assumes — it follows the welding route |
| Service | Pressure, temperature, and whether it is sour or low temperature |
| Seam NDT | Testing on the weld seam required beyond the standard |
| Seam orientation | State if the seam position is specified for installation |
| End preparation | Plain, bevelled, or threaded, and the bevel angle |
| Lengths | Random, double random, or cut to a stated length |
| Hydrostatic test | Mill test pressure and the certificate required |
| Coating and preservation | External coating and end caps for storage in the open |
| Quantity and programme | Metres or tonnes, with the required on-site date |
