Galvanised pipe carries its corrosion protection as a zinc layer, and every operation that cuts through that layer creates a bare steel surface that will corrode first. Threading is the obvious one: cutting a thread removes the coating exactly where the joint is, which is why threaded galvanised joints are made with a jointing compound that protects the exposed metal and why a threaded system is the first thing to fail in a humid coastal atmosphere. Cutting and welding do the same, and welding galvanised pipe also produces zinc fume, which is a real exposure requiring extraction rather than a nuisance. The specification to state is the coating mass or thickness rather than the word galvanised, because the difference between a light commercial coating and a proper hot dip layer is the difference between a few years and a few decades. Say the service, the size and schedule, the jointing method, and whether the pipe is buried.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Coating | Coating mass or thickness — not simply the word galvanised |
|---|---|
| Galvanising method | Hot dip after manufacture, or pre-galvanised strip |
| Size and schedule | Nominal size and schedule, or outside diameter and wall |
| Service | Water, air, fire protection, conduit, or structural |
| Jointing method | Threaded, grooved, or welded — each affects the coating |
| Thread protection | Jointing compound to protect the bare metal at every thread |
| Welding | State if welding is planned — zinc fume needs extraction |
| Buried or exposed | Buried runs need wrapping over the galvanising |
| Potable water | State if the pipe carries drinking water |
| Fittings | Matching galvanised fittings, unions and nipples |
| Certification | Certificate type and the coating test report |
| Quantity and lengths | Metres per size, and the length supplied |
