Seamless pipe is pierced and rolled from a solid billet, so there is no longitudinal weld anywhere in it — and that single absence is what specifications are buying when they call for it. A weld is a discontinuity: it has its own heat-affected zone, its own inspection requirement and its own behaviour under fatigue, sour service and low temperature, and where a code will not accept that, seamless is the answer rather than a preference. Expect two consequences at the enquiry. Wall thickness on seamless pipe is controlled to a wider tolerance than on welded pipe, because of how it is made, so a design working close to a minimum wall has to allow for it explicitly. And availability is narrower: not every grade exists in every size and schedule, and long-lead items in larger diameters are made to order rather than stocked.
