HDPE moves far more with temperature than steel does, and on an exposed run in this climate that is the design problem rather than a footnote. A long line laid in the sun and then filled with cool water contracts substantially, and a system restrained at both ends without provision for it puts that movement into the joints and the anchors. Buried runs are largely restrained by the soil; above ground, the expansion arrangement is part of the design. The second thing to settle is the pressure rating, which is not a single number: HDPE is rated by the ratio of diameter to wall thickness together with the material designation, and the resulting pressure rating falls as the operating temperature rises — so a rating quoted at 20 degrees is not the rating you have at 45. Then jointing: butt fusion and electrofusion make a joint as strong as the pipe, and both need trained operators and a record of the fusion parameters.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Material designation | The polyethylene grade, with the pressure rating and SDR |
|---|---|
| Operating temperature | Pressure rating falls as temperature rises — state the real one |
| Size | Outside diameter and SDR, or the wall thickness |
| Service | Potable water, irrigation, drainage, gas, or industrial effluent |
| Buried or exposed | Exposed runs need an expansion arrangement designed in |
| Thermal movement | Run length and the temperature swing it will see |
| Jointing method | Butt fusion, electrofusion, or mechanical compression |
| Fusion records | State if fusion parameter records are required at handover |
| Ultraviolet stability | Carbon black content or a UV grade for exposed runs |
| Supply form | Coils for smaller diameters, or straight lengths |
| Fittings | Electrofusion fittings, flange adaptors and transition fittings |
| Potable approval | State if drinking water approval is required |
