Angle is the most-used and least-specified section on most sites, and the reason it causes trouble is that its structural behaviour is awkward. Its principal axes are not the two legs, so an angle loaded in the obvious direction bends and twists at the same time, which is why single angles in compression are governed by rules that look conservative until somebody ignores them. For bracing, purlins, cleats and framing that is all handled by the design; what the buyer needs to get right is that unequal angle is not equal angle turned round, and that the designation states both leg lengths and the thickness in a fixed order. Beyond that, angle is bought in mill lengths and cut, so the length nesting matters — asking for cut lengths lets the supplier nest them and can cut waste substantially compared with buying stock lengths and cutting on site. State grade, sizes, lengths and whether galvanising is required.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Designation | Both leg lengths and the thickness, in the standard order |
|---|---|
| Equal or unequal | Unequal angle is not equal angle turned round |
| Steel grade | Such as an EN 10025-2 or ASTM grade named by the design |
| Lengths | Cut lengths for nesting, or mill lengths for site cutting |
| Quantity | Pieces per size and length, or total tonnage |
| Application | Bracing, cleats, framing, purlins, or trim |
| Hole punching or drilling | State if holes are to be supplied, with the gauge lines |
| Surface preparation | As-rolled with mill scale, or blasted to a cleanliness grade |
| Protective treatment | Paint system or hot dip galvanising |
| Corrosivity category | Coastal exposure decides the coating specification |
| Certification | Mill certificate type and traceability to the heat |
| Delivery | Bundle weights, site access and offloading arrangement |
