A hollow section is efficient in torsion and about both axes, which makes it the natural choice for trusses, frames, handrails and anything that has to look reasonable while carrying load. Its distinguishing question is the inside. A sealed section keeps its internal surface dry indefinitely and needs no internal protection; one with an unsealed penetration, a drain hole or an open end lets humid coastal air in, and the inside corrodes where nobody can see it or repaint it. Decide early whether sections are sealed or drained and detail the ends accordingly, because it is a fabrication decision that cannot be retrofitted. The second point is the corner. A cold formed section is work hardened at the corners, and welding into that zone or bending a section tightly is constrained in a way a rolled section is not — so the manufacturing route belongs in the enquiry alongside the size and grade.
