Wide flange sections are what carry axial load, and the property that makes them do it is a flange width comparable to the section depth, which gives stiffness about both axes rather than only the strong one. That is why they are the default for columns, for piles and for heavily loaded transfer beams, and why substituting a narrow-flange I section of the same depth is not a like-for-like change. Within the family the series matter: sections of the same nominal depth are rolled in light, medium and heavy variants with progressively thicker webs and flanges, so the designation carries the weight per metre and the depth alone does not identify anything. Send the designation from the drawing. Then the two questions that decide the cost after the steel itself: the connection detail, because drilling, coping and end plates are fabrication rather than supply, and the coating, since a column standing in coastal air carries a corrosivity category that dictates the system.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Section designation | The full designation with series — depth alone identifies nothing |
|---|---|
| Axial load | Design compression, with any coincident moment |
| Effective length | Storey height and the restraint conditions at each end |
| Steel grade | Such as an EN 10025-2 or ASTM grade named by the design |
| Base connection | Base plate, stiffeners and the holding down bolt arrangement |
| Splice positions | Where the column is joined, set by transport and lifting |
| Incoming beam connections | Cleats and stiffeners where beams frame into the column |
| Piece weight and length | Against the crane and the transport available |
| Pile driving | For bearing piles, the driving conditions and any shoe required |
| Protective treatment | Paint system or galvanising, with the film thickness |
| Fire protection | State if intumescent or board protection is required |
| Certification | Mill certificate type and traceability to the heat |
