A channel puts a flat back against something and its two legs out, which is why it turns up wherever a member has to sit against a wall, a slab edge or another member — edge beams, stair stringers, trimmers, machine bases and framing around openings. Its structural quirk is that the section is not symmetrical about the web, so its shear centre lies outside the section: load it through the web and it twists as well as bends, which is why channels in bending are usually restrained or used in pairs back to back. That is a design matter, but it explains why the drawing may call for a pair where one looks sufficient. On the buying side there are two families with different flange forms — tapered flange and parallel flange — and they are not interchangeable for fit-up, because a bolt through a tapered flange needs a taper washer. Order by designation, and state whether galvanising is required.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Designation | The full section designation from the drawing |
|---|---|
| Flange form | Tapered or parallel flange — they differ for fit-up and bolting |
| Steel grade | Such as an EN 10025-2 or ASTM grade named by the design |
| Lengths | Cut lengths required, or mill lengths for cutting on site |
| Quantity | Pieces per section and length, or total tonnage |
| Paired sections | State if channels are supplied back to back or toe to toe |
| Taper washers | Needed where bolts pass through a tapered flange |
| Application | Edge beam, stringer, trimmer, machine base, or framing |
| Surface preparation | As-rolled with mill scale, or blasted to a cleanliness grade |
| Protective treatment | Paint system or hot dip galvanising |
| Corrosivity category | Coastal exposure decides the coating specification |
| Certification | Mill certificate type and traceability to the heat |
