An HMI is bought for the panel door and the person standing at it, so the first constraint is the cut-out that already exists and the second is the light falling on it. A resistive touch screen works through a gloved hand and is still the right choice for a plant where operators wear gloves; a projected capacitive screen is brighter and cleaner but needs bare fingers or gloves made for it. Screen brightness matters more here than in most markets, because a panel on an outdoor skid competes with direct sun and a standard indoor display is unreadable by nine in the morning. Then the software questions that determine whether it is usable in two years: which protocol it must speak to the controller, whether Arabic text has to render alongside English, and how the project file is backed up and versioned, since an HMI whose only copy of its screens is inside itself is a single point of failure.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Screen size and cut-out | Diagonal, and the aperture in the existing panel door |
|---|---|
| Touch technology | Resistive for gloved use, or capacitive |
| Brightness | Indoor, or a high-brightness display for direct sun |
| IP rating | Front face rating, and the rear if the panel is not sealed |
| Controller protocol | The PLC family and protocol it must communicate with |
| Ports | Ethernet, serial, USB, and how many of each |
| Language support | State if Arabic and English must render on the same screens |
| Alarm handling | Local alarm list, logging, and any remote notification |
| Data logging | Trend storage, removable media, or export to a server |
| Panel ambient | Temperature behind the door, not the room temperature |
| Hazardous area | State the zone if the panel sits in a classified area |
| Engineering scope | State if screen development is included in the enquiry |
