    Variable Frequency Drives

Sourced and supplied across Saudi Arabia

A drive is sized by the load curve, not by the motor nameplate, and the distinction decides whether the installation works. A pump or a fan is a variable torque load whose demand falls away sharply as speed drops, and that is where a drive saves real money. A conveyor, a mixer, an extruder or a positive displacement pump is a constant torque load that needs full torque at low speed, which requires a larger drive and often forced ventilation on the motor, because a motor cooled by its own shaft fan stops cooling itself when it slows down. Two further items belong in the enquiry rather than in commissioning. The cable run from drive to motor determines whether reflected wave voltage will stress the motor insulation, so long runs need output filters. And the drive is a harmonic source: on a weak supply or where many drives share a transformer, the mitigation is part of the design.

What to state in your enquiry

The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.

Motor ratingkW, full load current, voltage and rated speed from the nameplate
Load typeVariable torque such as pump or fan, or constant torque
Speed rangeMinimum and maximum, and the torque needed at minimum
Motor cooling at low speedState if forced ventilation is fitted or required
Overload requirementPercentage and duration the drive must sustain
Supply voltage and frequency230/400 V at 60 Hz for the Saudi system
Cable length to motorLong runs need output filters against reflected wave stress
Harmonic mitigationLine reactor, DC choke, or active front end where required
BrakingDynamic braking resistor or regenerative unit for overhauling loads
Enclosure and ambientIP rating and the temperature inside the panel, not the room
Control and commsAnalogue reference, digital inputs, or a fieldbus protocol
Safety functionState if Safe Torque Off is required by the machine assessment
BypassState if a contactor bypass to direct on line is required
