Remote monitoring is bought for assets that are too far apart to visit — well pads, remote pump stations, tank farms, cathodic protection points, water networks — and the constraint that shapes everything is power and signal at the far end. If there is no mains supply, the site runs on a solar panel and a battery, and that fixes a power budget which in turn fixes how often the unit may wake up and transmit. A device that reports every minute and one that reports four times a day are different products with different panels and different batteries. Coverage is the twin question: a cellular router is simplest where there is signal, a low-power wide-area radio suits small payloads over long distances, and satellite is what remains beyond both. Then say what actually has to happen when a value goes out of range, because an alarm nobody receives at three in the morning is not monitoring.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Assets monitored | What is being watched, and how many sites |
|---|---|
| Signals per site | Analogue, digital and pulse inputs, and any control outputs |
| Reporting interval | How often data must arrive — this sets the power budget |
| Power available | Mains, solar with battery, or battery only |
| Solar sizing | Panel and battery sizing for the reporting interval and autonomy |
| Communications | Cellular, low-power wide-area radio, or satellite |
| Coverage | State known signal conditions at the remote sites |
| Alarm routing | Who is notified out of hours, and by what means |
| Data destination | Cloud platform, on-premises SCADA, or both |
| Enclosure and rating | IP rating, sun exposure and internal temperature |
| Hazardous area | State the zone if the outstation sits in a classified area |
| Security | Encryption, device authentication and how firmware is updated |
| Recurring cost | SIM or airtime and platform subscription per site |
