A heat exchanger is sized from four temperatures and two flows, and the number that quietly governs the result is the approach — how close the two streams are allowed to come at the tight end. Asking for a closer approach buys a much larger exchanger for a small gain, so it is worth deciding deliberately rather than inheriting it from a template. The other input that changes the size materially is the fouling allowance: an exchanger designed clean will not hold its duty once a film has formed, and one designed with a generous allowance is oversized when new. Match it to the fluid and to how often it will actually be cleaned. Then the type. A gasketed plate exchanger is compact, achieves a close approach, and can be opened, cleaned and re-plated; a shell-and-tube handles higher pressures and temperatures, dirtier fluids and fluids the gaskets could not survive. Seawater service is its own conversation about materials.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Duty | Heat transferred, or the flows and all four temperatures |
|---|---|
| Fluids | Both sides, with properties, and any solids or fouling tendency |
| Approach temperature | A closer approach buys a much larger exchanger |
| Fouling allowance | Matched to the fluid and the real cleaning interval |
| Design pressure and temperature | Both sides, including upset conditions |
| Permitted pressure drop | Both sides — it constrains the design as much as the duty |
| Exchanger type | Gasketed plate, brazed plate, or shell and tube |
| Materials | Plate, tube, shell and gasket materials suited to both fluids |
| Seawater service | State if present — it decides the alloy and the cost |
| Cleaning access | Whether the unit must be openable, and the tube pull space |
| Code and certification | The pressure vessel code and certificates required |
| Future duty | State if extra plates or capacity margin should be allowed for |
