A fan is specified by two numbers together and one of them is nearly always missing from the enquiry. Volume flow is easy to state. Static pressure — what the fan must push against, made up of the ductwork, the bends, the filters, the grilles and any attenuator — is the number that decides whether it will move that volume once it is installed, and a fan chosen on flow alone delivers far less than expected on a real system. Work out the resistance and quote both. The second decision is what the fan is moving. General extract, kitchen grease-laden air, fume from a process, and smoke from a fire are four different duties, and the last of them is not a normal fan at all — smoke extract fans are rated to keep running at elevated temperature for a stated period, which is a certification rather than a specification detail. State the duty, the flow, the resistance and whether anything in the airstream is corrosive or flammable.
