Duct leakage is the loss nobody sees and everybody pays for. Air that escapes through joints between the fan and the room is air the fan has moved, cooled and dehumidified for nothing, and on a poorly sealed system it can be a substantial fraction of everything the plant produces — which is why a leakage class belongs in the specification alongside the pressure class, and why a pressure test on a sample of the installed work is worth insisting on before the ceilings close. The pressure class itself comes first, because it decides the gauge, the joint type and the stiffening the duct needs; ducting built to a lower class than the fan will deliver distorts and leaks. Insulation is the third element and it is not only about heat gain: on a chilled duct in humid air, insulation with an intact vapour barrier is what stops condensation forming on the outside and dripping through a ceiling.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Air volume and velocity | Per branch, with the resulting duct sizes |
|---|---|
| Pressure class | It sets the gauge, joint type and stiffening required |
| Leakage class | State it, and whether an installed pressure test is required |
| Duct material | Galvanised steel, stainless, aluminium, or pre-insulated panel |
| Insulation | Thickness and, on chilled ducts, an intact vapour barrier |
| Vapour barrier | Condensation control on chilled duct in humid air |
| Fittings | Bends, tees, transitions, dampers and access doors |
| Fire dampers | Where the duct crosses a fire compartment boundary |
| Acoustic treatment | Attenuators where the duct serves quiet spaces |
| Location | Internal ceiling void, plant room, or external run in sun |
| External runs | Weatherproof cladding and UV-stable finish |
| Supply scope | Materials only, fabricated to drawing, or fabricate and install |
