Cast iron survives in building drainage for a reason that has nothing to do with strength: it is quiet. A plastic soil stack passing behind the wall of a hotel room or an apartment transmits the sound of every discharge above it, and the complaint arrives after handover when the stack is buried in the riser. Cast iron's mass damps that, which is why specifications for hospitality, healthcare and residential towers keep calling for it. It also does not soften or support flame spread, which matters where the stack passes through fire compartments. The cost is weight and support. A vertical stack has to be carried at each floor rather than hung from the pipe below it, and the bracket schedule is part of the design. Modern systems are push-fit or coupling-jointed rather than caulked, so the joint is quick, but the coupling type and any restraint at bends must be specified with the pipe.
