Copper is specified by wall thickness under a letter or a grade rather than by a schedule, and the letters are not decoration: under ASTM B88 types K, L and M share an outside diameter and differ in wall, so they interchange dimensionally while carrying different pressures and different service lives. Choosing M where the specification called for L saves money on the invoice and shortens the life of the installation. The second decision is temper. Hard drawn tube comes in straight lengths, is rigid and is soldered or brazed; annealed tube comes in coils, bends by hand and suits refrigeration runs and awkward routes, and it is the softer material that gets damaged on site. Two further points worth settling early: medical gas and refrigeration tube are cleaned and capped grades and are not ordinary plumbing tube, and copper on an open site is a theft target, so delivery timing and storage belong in the plan.
