A centrifugal pump is selected at a duty point, and a duty point is two numbers: flow and total head. Head is where enquiries go wrong, because it is not the height the liquid is lifted — it is that height plus every friction loss in the pipe, the fittings, the strainer and the control valve, at the flow you actually want. A pump chosen on static lift alone delivers less than expected and runs off its curve, which wastes power and shortens the seal and bearing life. The second number that has to come from the site rather than the catalogue is NPSH available: the margin between the pressure at the suction and the vapour pressure of the liquid. If it is below what the pump requires, the liquid boils at the impeller eye and the pump cavitates, which sounds like gravel and destroys the impeller. Hot liquid, a long suction line or a lift rather than a flooded suction all reduce it.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.

| Configuration | End suction, split case, multistage, vertical inline or sump |
| Materials | Casing, impeller and shaft materials suited to the liquid |
| Shaft sealing | Packed gland or mechanical seal, and the API 682 seal plan |
| Driver | Motor rating and supply, or an engine or turbine drive |
