A gear pump is a positive displacement machine, and the single most important consequence is that it will keep pushing until something gives. Close a valve downstream of a running centrifugal pump and it churns; close one downstream of a gear pump and pressure rises until the relief valve opens, or until a pipe, a seal or the coupling fails. So a pressure relief path is part of the installation, not an accessory, and whether it is built into the pump or fitted in the line has to be decided at order time. The other governing property is viscosity, and it cuts both ways. These pumps are chosen for thick liquids — lube oil, fuel oil, resin, bitumen — because they handle viscosity where a centrifugal pump cannot, but viscosity that is too high starves the inlet, so the pump must be slowed down. State the viscosity at the pumping temperature rather than at ambient, because for heated products the difference is enormous.
