Air-operated double diaphragm pumps are bought for the things they tolerate rather than for efficiency. They self-prime, they run dry without damage, they stall harmlessly against a closed valve instead of building pressure until something bursts, and with the right wetted parts they move acids, slurries and abrasives that would destroy a rotating pump. The stall behaviour is genuinely useful: a pump filling a tank against a level valve simply stops and waits, with no control system involved. What buyers underestimate is the running cost, because compressed air is expensive to make and a diaphragm pump is not frugal with it — the air consumption at the intended duty belongs in the comparison alongside the purchase price, and it is why these are usually the right answer for intermittent transfer and the wrong one for continuous high flow. Specify the wetted materials against the chemistry: the body, the diaphragms, the balls and the seats can each be a different material.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Liquid | Fluid, concentration, temperature, solids and abrasiveness |
|---|---|
| Flow rate and discharge head | Required duty, and whether it is intermittent or continuous |
| Body material | Polypropylene, PVDF, aluminium, cast iron or stainless |
| Diaphragm material | PTFE, Santoprene-type, NBR or EPDM, matched to the chemistry |
| Ball and seat material | Often different from the body — state both |
| Air supply | Available pressure and flow at the pump, not at the compressor |
| Air consumption | At the intended duty — it is the real running cost |
| Suction lift | Dry and wet lift required |
| Solids size | Largest particle that must pass through |
| Duty pattern | Intermittent transfer, or continuous running |
| Hazardous area | State the zone, and whether earthing and bonding are required |
| Mounting | Portable trolley, bench, or fixed with a pulsation dampener |
