A submersible pump puts the motor in the liquid, which solves the priming problem and creates a cooling problem in its place. The motor is cooled by the liquid flowing past it, so a borehole pump hanging in a casing much wider than the pump does not get that flow and runs hot — the fix is a flow sleeve, and it is decided when the pump is selected, not when the motor fails. Borehole duty needs the well data with the enquiry: casing diameter, static and pumping water level, drawdown at the intended flow, and the depth the pump will hang at, because those set both the head and whether the pump physically fits. Drainage and sewage duty is a different question again, where the size of solid the impeller must pass governs the choice — a vortex impeller passes large solids at lower efficiency, a channel impeller is more efficient and blocks more easily. Say which duty and send the water or effluent analysis.
