Accessories are ordered last and hold up the most installations, because almost every one of them is dimensioned to a specific cable rather than to a nominal size. A gland is selected from the cable's actual outer diameter and, on armoured cable, from the armour wire diameter as well; a lug is selected from the conductor cross-section, the stud size and the crimp die available on site; a cleat is selected from the cable diameter and, critically, from the prospective short-circuit current, because the force between cables during a fault is what tears an inadequately restrained trefoil off its rack. That last point is the one most often skipped, and it is the one that turns a fault into an incident. Send the cable schedule — type, diameter, armour, cross-section and the fault level — rather than a list of nominal sizes, and the accessory list can be built to match it.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Cable type and outer diameter | Actual OD, not nominal size — glands are chosen from it |
|---|---|
| Armour details | Wire diameter and material, for armour-clamping glands |
| Conductor cross-section | For lug and ferrule selection |
| Accessory types | Glands, lugs, cleats, joints, shrouds, ties or markers |
| Gland material | Brass, nickel-plated brass or stainless for coastal exposure |
| Hazardous area | State the zone and protection type if Ex glands are required |
| IP rating | Required sealing at the entry, including any outer seal |
| Entry thread | Metric or NPT, and the thread length in the enclosure wall |
| Fault level | Prospective short-circuit current — it sizes the cleats |
| Cleat formation | Trefoil or flat, and the spacing along the run |
| Crimping tooling | State the dies available on site so lugs match |
| Quantity | Per cable type — send the cable schedule rather than a size list |
