Low-voltage cable is sized on paper and fails in the ground. IEC 60502-1 current ratings are published against reference conditions — a stated ambient, a stated soil thermal resistivity, one circuit on its own — and none of those describe a duct bank in Dammam in August carrying six circuits through sand that has dried to a poor conductor of heat. Derating for ambient, for grouping and for soil resistivity routinely takes a cable two sizes up from the figure a table first suggests, and a cable that runs warm does not fail immediately; it ages its insulation quietly and fails in year seven. The other decision that belongs in the enquiry is fire performance, because a cable that will run through an occupied building or an escape route is specified against flame propagation, halogen emission and smoke density, and those are separate requirements from the current rating.
