High-voltage cable is a project rather than a purchase, and it is worth saying so plainly: above about 36 kV nothing is a catalogue item. The cable is made to the route, and the route survey comes first — because drum length, drum weight, the crane access at each delivery point, the maximum pulling tension and sidewall pressure at every bend, and the position of every joint bay are all fixed before a length can be quoted. Two further inputs shape the design. The rating is calculated for the specific thermal environment of that route, including the trench profile, any thermal backfill and the crossings with other services. And the accessories and testing carry the schedule risk, since jointing at this voltage needs qualified jointers and the commissioning tests are specified in the contract. Send the route drawing, the system voltage and earthing philosophy, and the programme dates.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| System voltage | Such as 66 kV, 115 kV, 132 kV or 230 kV |
|---|---|
| Conductor size and material | Copper or aluminium, and whether it is Milliken construction |
| Insulation | XLPE is usual; state if another system is specified |
| Metallic sheath or screen | Type and cross-section for the earth fault duty |
| Bonding arrangement | Solid, single point, or cross-bonded with link boxes |
| Route profile | Length, bends, crossings, and the trench or duct arrangement |
| Thermal environment | Backfill type, burial depth and adjacent heat sources |
| Drum lengths and weights | Set by joint bay positions and site delivery access |
| Pulling limits | Maximum tension and sidewall pressure on the route |
| Accessories | Terminations, joints, link boxes and earthing arrangement |
| Testing | Type, routine, and after-installation tests required |
| Jointing scope | State whether qualified jointing is included in the enquiry |
| Programme | Required on-site dates — manufacture is long lead |
