At medium voltage the cable is the cheap part of the job. The cost and the risk sit in the terminations, the joints and the metallic screen, and an enquiry that lists only a size and a length leaves all three unpriced. Three things need to be stated. The insulation level first: a system with fast earth-fault clearance is normally served by 100 percent insulation level, while a system that may run with a sustained earth fault needs 133 percent, and that is a system property rather than a preference. The screen bonding second — both ends, single-point with a parallel earth continuity conductor, or cross-bonded — because it decides circulating current, the effective rating and what accessories are needed. And the accessory schedule third: indoor and outdoor terminations, straight joints, and whether the site expects heat-shrink or cold-shrink workmanship.
