Two numbers on the label of a bonded cutting disc are safety information rather than product description, and both are worth checking on delivery. The first is maximum operating speed, marked in metres per second and in RPM: it must be at or above the no-load speed of the machine it goes on, because a disc spun faster than its rating can burst, and EN 12413 requires a disc to withstand at least 1.73 times its marked maximum speed for exactly that reason. The second is the expiry date, which the same standard requires on organic-bonded products — the resin bond degrades with age, and a disc found at the back of a store four years later is scrap. Beyond that, choose the disc for the material, and do not grind with a cutting disc: a thin disc is designed for load on its edge, not on its face, and side loading is how they break.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Material to be cut | Steel, stainless, aluminium, cast iron, stone or ductile pipe |
|---|---|
| Stainless requirement | Iron, sulphur and chlorine free discs where contamination matters |
| Disc diameter | Matched to the guard and the machine |
| Thickness | Thinner cuts faster with less heat; thicker survives more abuse |
| Bore size | Arbor hole to fit the machine spindle |
| Maximum operating speed | Must be at or above the machine no-load speed |
| Machine type | Angle grinder, chop saw, or petrol cut-off saw |
| Depressed centre or flat | Flat for chop saws, depressed centre where the guard needs clearance |
| Expiry date on delivery | Organic bonds age — state the minimum remaining life required |
| Certification marks | State if an oSa or equivalent mark is required |
| Annual volume | Discs per year for a schedule price rather than a one-off box |
| Storage | Flat, dry and supported — state if racking is needed |
