Duty cycle is where a welder specification meets this climate. A machine described as 300 amps at 60 percent means it can weld at 300 amps for six minutes in every ten and must idle for the other four — and that rating is quoted at a stated ambient temperature. In a workshop that is well above that figure for months of the year, the real duty cycle is lower than the label, and the machine that seemed adequate on paper spends the afternoon in thermal cut-out. Ask for the rating and the ambient it was measured at, then choose against the temperature the workshop actually reaches. The second decision is process. TIG gives control and a clean bead for stainless and thin material and is slow; MIG is faster for volume fabrication; and the choice determines everything downstream, since the torch, the gas, the wire feed and the consumables all follow it. Say what you weld, how thick, and in what position.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Process | MIG, TIG, MMA, or a multi-process machine |
|---|---|
| Material and thickness | What is welded, and the range of thickness |
| Output current range | Minimum and maximum welding current required |
| Duty cycle | Amps at percentage, AND the ambient it is rated at |
| Workshop ambient | The real temperature — it derates the published duty cycle |
| Supply | Voltage and phases at 60 Hz, and the available breaker rating |
| Generator operation | State if the machine will run from a generator |
| Wire feed | Integral or separate feeder, and the spool size |
| Torch | Air or water cooled, length, and any push-pull requirement |
| AC TIG | Required for aluminium — state if aluminium is in scope |
| Pulse capability | For thin material and out-of-position work |
| Portability | Bench, trolley, or site-portable with a carry frame |
| Consumables | Starting stock of tips, nozzles, liners and tungstens |
