The hazard with a power wire brush is not the brush failing, it is individual wires being thrown, and they are thrown continuously in normal use rather than as a fault. That is why full face protection is expected alongside eye protection whenever one is running, and why the maximum speed marked on the brush must be checked against the machine before it is fitted. The main selection choice is knot against crimped. Knotted wires are twisted into stiff bundles that hit hard and strip weld slag, scale and heavy coatings; crimped wires are softer, cover more area and clean lightly without cutting into the surface. Then material: stainless wire for stainless work, because ordinary carbon steel wire leaves particles that will rust on a stainless surface and get blamed on the parent metal. Brass and nylon-filled options exist for softer substrates and for use where sparking must be avoided.
