Oxy-fuel equipment is bought as a set, and the item nobody should ever leave off the order is the flashback arrestor. A flashback is the flame travelling back up the hose towards the cylinder, and arrestors fitted at the regulator and at the torch are what stop it — they are protective devices, not accessories, and equipment quoted without them is quoted incomplete. Beyond that, most of the specification follows the fuel gas. Acetylene burns hottest and pierces thick plate fastest; propane and LPG are cheaper and safer to store but need different nozzles and a different technique, and a nozzle intended for one fuel will not perform on another. Then the nozzle size is chosen by plate thickness rather than by preference, since an oversized nozzle wastes gas and widens the kerf while an undersized one will not sustain the cut. State the fuel, the thickness range, and whether the cutting is hand-held or on a profiling machine.
