The shade number is the specification, and it is set by the process and the current rather than by preference. A shade chosen too light lets through more radiation than the eye should take; one chosen too dark makes the weld pool hard to see, and the welder compensates by lifting the hood, which is worse than either. For an auto-darkening filter there are further numbers that matter more than the marketing. Switching time is how fast it goes dark; the light-state shade is what the welder sees while positioning; and the optical class describes how faithfully the filter transmits the image, which is what decides whether a full shift behind it is tiring. Note that an auto-darkening filter goes clear when its power fails, so the hood is still relied on to be in position. Say the processes, the current range, whether the work is out of position, and if a powered respirator must fit under it.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Processes used | MMA, MIG, TIG, plasma or gas cutting |
|---|---|
| Current range | With the process, this sets the shade number required |
| Shade range | Fixed shade, or the variable range for an auto-darkening filter |
| Light-state shade | What the welder sees while positioning before the arc strikes |
| Switching time | How quickly the filter darkens on arc strike |
| Optical class | Governs image fidelity, and fatigue over a full shift |
| Viewing area | Larger windows help on positional and confined work |
| Grinding mode | For welders who also grind without changing protection |
| Respirator compatibility | State if a powered air respirator must fit with the hood |
| Power | Solar assisted, replaceable cell, or both |
| Consumables | Inner and outer cover lenses and headgear spares |
| Quantity | Units, plus a cover lens holding per welder |
