Granules are broadcast rather than placed, which makes them the right answer on open ground, a yard, a haul road or a large workshop floor where a sheet product would be useless. The buying decision is almost entirely about what leaves site afterwards. Clay and diatomaceous granules are cheap by the bag and heavy in use — they absorb a modest fraction of their own weight, so a spill generates several times its own mass in contaminated waste, and hazardous disposal is charged by the tonne. Lighter recycled cellulose and synthetic granules cost more per bag and often less per incident once disposal is counted. The other thing to settle is what the floor is like afterwards: some granules leave a surface that is slick underfoot until it is swept, which matters on a walkway or a stair landing. State the liquid, the surface and how the waste is disposed of.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Liquid absorbed | Hydrocarbons, water-based liquids, acids or solvents |
|---|---|
| Granule base | Clay, diatomaceous earth, recycled cellulose or synthetic |
| Absorbency | Litres held per kilogram — drives the disposal weight |
| Surface applied to | Concrete, asphalt, compacted ground or a workshop floor |
| Slip behaviour | State if the area stays trafficked before sweeping |
| Temperature limit | State if applied to hot spills or hot surfaces |
| Dust generation | Low-dust grades where the area is occupied or enclosed |
| Pack size | Bag or drum weight suited to one-person handling |
| Disposal route | Contaminated waste stream — this often decides the grade |
| Storage | Bins, drums or a dispensing station at the point of use |
| Annual volume | Bags or tonnes per year for a schedule price |
