A spill pallet is secondary containment with a working deck on top, and it is specified by three numbers that have to be stated together: the sump volume, the load the deck must carry, and the material. Sump volume is the one that gets argued over at audit — many specifications call for the greater of the largest single container or a proportion of the total stored, so a four-drum pallet holding 205-litre drums is usually expected to contain around 230 litres rather than a nominal figure chosen from a catalogue. Load rating matters because a pallet that will be loaded by forklift with four full drums is carrying roughly a tonne, and deck failure under a full drum is the incident the pallet was bought to prevent. Material follows the chemistry: polyethylene handles most acids and alkalis and is the default outdoors, galvanised steel handles hydrocarbons and hot work areas but is attacked by some chemicals. State the container size, the count, the liquid, and whether it lives in the sun.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Container size and count | 205-litre drums, IBCs, or small containers — and how many |
|---|---|
| Required sump volume | State the figure your specification calls for, in litres |
| Deck load rating | Total weight of the containers when full |
| Material | Polyethylene or galvanised steel — decided by the chemistry |
| Liquid stored | Hydrocarbon, acid, alkali or solvent |
| Handling | Forklift pockets or pallet-truck access if it will be moved |
| Deck removal | Lift-out grating so the sump can be pumped and cleaned |
| Outdoor use | State if rain ingress or a cover or roof is required |
| UV exposure | Polyethylene in direct Gulf sun needs a UV-stabilised grade |
| Dispensing | State if drums are decanted in place and a shelf is needed |
| Ramp access | For drum trolleys or barrow loading |
| Quantity and locations | Units, and the store or work area each serves |
