Socks are a barrier product, and they are bought for geometry rather than for absorbency. Their job is to stop a spill reaching a drain, a doorway, a cable trench or the edge of a bund, and the specification that matters is total length and diameter — enough to ring the equipment or close off the run, with the ends able to overlap or clip together so the perimeter has no gap. Buyers who order by absorbed volume alone end up with the right capacity in the wrong shape and still lose the spill down a gully. Two further points: match the polymer to the liquid, because an oil-only sock repels water and will keep working in a wet bund while a universal sock saturates with rainwater and stops absorbing, and decide the disposal route before delivery, since a used sock leaves site as contaminated waste priced by weight.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Liquid absorbed | Oil only, universal, or chemical and aggressive liquids |
|---|---|
| Length per sock | The run each unit must close — state the perimeter needed |
| Diameter | Sets barrier height against the expected flow depth |
| End connection | Clips or overlap so the perimeter closes without a gap |
| Deployment | Around equipment, across a doorway, at a drain, or in a bund |
| Wet or dry surface | Standing water present decides oil-only versus universal |
| Outer sleeve | Mesh or fabric — affects abrasion resistance on concrete |
| Temperature limit | State if the liquid is hot, such as a lube oil or condensate leak |
| Disposal route | Contaminated waste stream and any incineration requirement |
| Packaging | Bagged bulk for a store, or packed into a spill kit |
| Quantity | Units per size, and the annual replenishment volume |
